Today is Jacqueline's thirty-third birthday. I have often felt some difficult emotions on her birthdays when she and I have been apart, but both good and bad feelings fade over time—even love and longing and regret.
I still think of Jacqueline, obviously, but I do not miss the emotional turmoil that beset our lives—and for a time, Kristen's life—when Jacqueline and I were emotionally attached to each other. I don't think that made anyone happy.
Wherever Jacqueline is now, I hope she is happy and healthy. I hope she has fallen in love with someone who is good for her; someone who makes her happy; someone who makes her feel that every path she has traveled in her life was worth traveling because every one of them brought her part of the way to where she is now.
