Please Note: My personal journal is now fully independent of my main personal Web site, but I am still working on some things such as my new page designs and many improvements to PageDrive, my software that runs my journal site. If you encounter any technical problems, please either just try again a while later or let me know.
On Saturday afternoon, as Joel and I were driving from his new home toward his storage unit to move things from the latter to the former, I received an unexpected telephone call from Erin's sister, Emrie. She was calling to let me know that her kittens were ready to be adopted and to ask me if I would like to meet them and adopt one this weekend.
Although I knew the time for adoption was coming soon, I did not realize quite how soon, so the news took me a bit by surprise. I told Emrie I needed to consider the logistics of procuring some necessities and making the trip to Richmond and back to Santa Clara before deciding which day to make the trip, but it wasn't long before surprise gave way to excitement and I realized that Saturday would be the day.
I found a friend to keep me company for the drive (my sister-in-law Jennifer's friend, Kristen, whom I recently met and befriended while helping Joel and Jennifer move), set off to buy most of the basic items I needed and wanted for my new kitten from a local pet store (save for litter, which I decided to buy later at a store with better prices for small quantities), then kept going until I reached the source of kitteny goodness in Richmond. Unfortunately, I did not arrive in time to see Emrie before she had to leave for a while, but her boyfriend, Matt, was kind enough to introduce me to all of the kittens.
Three of the kittens had ribbons around their necks, indicating that they were spoken for. Actually, one of the kittens (the one Matt is keeping) seemed to think that the ribbon indicated that it had a fun toy tied to its neck, so that ribbon was doing double duty. That left four from which to choose and every one of them was adorable.
The best relationships between humans and cats seem to involve more than the humans choosing their cats, though; it seems perhaps even more important to me for the cats to choose their humans. I was especially happy when one of the kittens seemed not only healthy and playful and unafraid of me, but genuinely interested in me and comfortable with me. When I realized that I had a connection with this one kitten beyond any connection I had with the others, I knew I had found my kitten. It felt as though my kitten and I had chosen each other and after almost thirty hours with her, it still does.
Although I bought a soft, comfortable pet bed that made the pet carrier a bit more hospitable for the drive back to Santa Clara, my new kitten spent her entire first night here cuddled up with me on my bed. As I sit in my office typing this, she lays stretched out and asleep on my lap. She is quite the little cuddler.
I suspect I will write more about my wonderful little kitten very soon. She is a little treasure and I love having her here with me.
